Yesterday we received our Zimbabwean colleague from South Africa at Schiphol Airport: Mike. Together with his family he is now in their home. Next week he will start working as a Project Engineer HVAC and this week we will arrange most of the formalities.
Arrival in the Netherlands
The family finally arrived in the Netherlands after transfers in Angola and Spain. Prior to arrival, a number of important matters had already been arranged. For example, finding a suitable home is always a challenge in the current housing market in the Netherlands. Fortunately with the help of Tweelwonen Leiden, a home was arranged fairly quickly. This meant that upon arrival we could immediately pick up the keys and check-in. With having a home and thus a rental contract, we were able to go to the relevant municipality as early as today to formally arrange the move from abroad. From this follows a Dutch registration number (BSN) which in turn is important for subsequent formalities.
The first challenge: the cold
Upon arrival we immediately noticed that the family was more or less dressed for colder weather in South Africa. However, this is a different kind of cold than what can be felt in the Netherlands. Thus, the family noticed it as soon as they walked into the Schiphol parking lot. Apart from the formalities, Mike had set clear goals: arrange for a thicker coat and thick gloves!
Formalities in the Netherlands
The other formalities such as visiting the client, picking up the residence permits and the application for the 30% ruling have now been arranged. This ensures that Mike has everything ready prior to his start at the client. This is always our goal however not always the result as we depend on many external factors such as the housing market and immigration authorities.
We are happy that the process went the way it did for Mike and his family and wish them good luck with all the challenges in the Netherlands.
